Personal Style: Layering For Winter

Transitioning into winter is the perfect time to practice the art of layering. When executed correctly, layering your items allows you to create outfits that are as practical as well as fashionable. Fine layers provide warmth without creating bulk, allowing you to keep toasty without sacrificing your style quotient.

A loose fitting sweater is an essential versatile item for cold-weather layering. The short length of this knitted white sweater makes it an ideal accompaniment to the longer length of the black and white blouse underneath it, and the V-neck of the sweater also showcases the collar of the blouse. The necklace detail is a great example of how you can make fabulous accessories out of items you already own; it is actually a scarf with tassels fashioned into a bow.

Leggings are form fitting and comfortable to wear, making them a great layering option. These mustard leggings add a dash of color to the winter whites of the tops and are thick enough to keep you warm.

The black and white booties mirror the colors of the blouse, the teal gloves beautifully contrast with the color of the leggings, and for those moments of winter sunshine the round metallic sunglasses add a touch of avant-garde eccentricity.

Personal Style: Customizing Your Wardrobe

Not all your personal style desires can be fulfilled solely by the offerings of high street shops and designer boutiques; wearing something straight off the rack can sometimes lack je ne sais quoi and leave you feeling uninspired. The solution to this sartorial predicament is to transform your clothes and fine-tune them to your liking by customizing them.

One of the easiest ways to modify a piece of clothing is to simply change the buttons. The original buttons on this cropped black jacket were substituted with textured white buttons that add color contrast as well as a playful touch.

Fabric necklaces are an easy (and detachable!) way to add interest to simple items. The black lace necklace placed under the collar of this silk orange top works both as a separate accent as well as an inherent part of the top.

When it comes to tights, why choose between two designs when you can wear them together? These creative DIY statement tights show that stripes and polka dots make for a delightfully mismatched pairing.

Customizing is an easy way to individualize your clothes and make your look all your own. This eccentric, eye-catching outfit showcases the power of personalizing your pieces and illustrates how small tweaks can add character and whimsy.
